We all know, and it is a fact that we don’t learn the same way. There are different learning styles, and these styles refer to and describe the different ways we process information.

It can also refer to the various ways one can assimilate information. If you are aware of what learning style works best for you, you can retain more information and assimilate it better.

You can have higher grades in exams, become more efficient in your academics, and retain information for a longer period of time.

In this article, I will be talking about an aural learner, characteristics, study techniques, and the importance of learning aurally.

Who is an Aural Learner?

An aural learner is one who assimilates information faster and learn best by hearing and listening. These group of learners prefer to listen to lectures than write, and when studying would prefer to read out.

Characteristics of an Aural Learner

  • They prefer to hear aloud:

If you find yourself asking someone to relate a piece of information to you while you listen, then you might be in this category of learners.

Aural learners always prefer to hear things out loud and tend to retain more information when they learn it by hearing or listening. These learners, even when studying by themselves, prefer to read aloud.

  • Audio books and audio bible:

Aural learners like audio books and audio bibles because it is more convenient and suits their style of learning.

  • They do not regard visual information.

An aural learner do not regard visual messages like bars and charts, as these do not make much meaning to them. They would still prefer that one explains it to them.

  • They like a quiet environment:

An aural learner prefers an environment that is quiet so they can focus and pay utmost attention.

Since they prefer to listen to the information, they would like to do that with ease and not struggle to hear amidst noise. They are attracted to clear and audible sounds.

  • They are very good with names:

Aural learners are very good with people’s names and can recall them easily most of the time. They are at an advantage when it comes to this.

  • They talk to themselves often:

Aural learners talk to themselves most times in order to process information. They often find themselves repeating things to themselves just so they can retain it.

Study Patterns for an Aural Learner:

There are different study patterns that aids the aural learner:

  • They could record the classes and listen to them later.
  • When solving mathematical problems, they could first translate into an oral problem and then solve it afterward.
  • They could study by reading aloud to themselves and memorize by reading aloud also.
  • You can learn by making use of acronyms and pronouncing it loudly or forming poems or songs with them.
  • They get to talk about the things they learned and how to make use of the knowledge.
  • They can try teaching others or their peers what they learned.
  • You can also engage in group discussions. 
  • They can put a difficult concept in a story, and this could help them a lot.

The Importance of Learning Aurally

This is a very active way of learning as it helps you interact properly or even better with your classmates and peers. Taking our kids through learning aurally can actually go a long way in helping them become better learners.

  • You grow the emotional aspect of the child:

When you learn, you tend to put yourself in the teacher’s shoes and look into the teacher’s eyes while he or she is talking which actually creates a type of bond. 

  • They develop social skills faster:

Kids that listen to audios or radio program tend to develop socially on very fast pace and most times is very easy for them to make friends.

  • Improves their learning tremendously:

Listening is a very important skill when it comes to learning a language, hence this skill makes it easy for them to learn a language. Listening to audios helps kids work on their memory, and also goes a long way to help them develop their vocabulary.

Careers an Aural Learner Can Engage in:

Since they have a very strong and effective communication skill, they find themselves doing jobs that are highly interactive and needs one to be socially active. However, it has also been proven that about 30% of the population are aural learners.

  • Teacher

They are always seen talking or listening to the kids. The ability to talk to their students, answer their questions and pass lots of information comfortably makes it a job for aural learners.

  • Speech pathologist

They help correct one’s speech disorder. They are able to assess their patient’s issues regarding their speech and how to effectively deal with it.

  • Therapist

They can be called psychiatrists, and they spend all their time listening to their patients in order to ascertain what really is their issue or what problem they have.

They listen to their stories, life tales and ask questions and listen carefully to their responses. Here in this profession, what you say matters a lot and that is why to excel in this career, the skills of an auditory learner is required.

  • TV personality

Those that do TV shows and talk shows on radios talk for a living. To be successful in this job, you will have to be develop your listening and hearing abilities.

  • Journalist

Orators are in high demand as you need to develop your speaking talents in order to keep up with your careers.

It is awesome for one to have more than one learning style. In order to find which of the styles works best for you, try out all of them, and then choose the style that you are more comfortable with, which helps you learn better, retain longer and assimilate information better.
