The vegetarian scholarship is a big scholarship of $20,000 (twenty thousand dollars) given to 3 winners every year by the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) for public education on the issues of vegan and vegetarian lifestyle choices and related issues such as environment and nutrition.

The vegetarian scholarship will award the three students two awards: one $10,000 scholarship winner and two $5,000 scholarship winners.

About the sponsor of the Vegetarian Scholarship

This vegetarian scholarship is sponsored by the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG). This group has been working hard for 40 (forty) years promoting vegan and vegetarian activism since they started in 1982.

The Vegetarian Resource Group is a non-profit organization that educates the public on veganism and related health and nutrition issues.

Eligibility requirements for the Vegetarian Scholarship

  • Applicants must be in their final year in any high school in the United States.
  • Applicant must demonstrate an active role and a strong commitment to promoting a vegan diet and lifestyle. 
  • Applicant must go on to attend college or university in the United States.

How to Apply

The vegetarian scholarship, just like many other scholarships for education, requires that applicants write and submit an essay.

In the case of this vegetarian scholarship, there’s no topic for the essay, but the vegetarian resource group asks every applicant to address the following issues in their essays:

  • How you promoted vegetarianism in your high school and your community
  • Your successes
  • Your challenges
  • What you learned and what you would do differently
  • How to expect to promote vegetarianism in college and beyond
  • Your future goals
  • Your strengths
  • Your weaknesses
  • Your perfect life in five years
  • Why you should receive this scholarship
  • How you became vegetarian, and why are you a vegetarian
  • How do you define vegetarian
  • Why vegetarianism is important to you
  • What else is important to you
  • What vegetarian foods you would recommend to a non-vegetarian.
  • What restaurants you would recommend to a non-vegetarian.

Applicants will not have to fill out an application form but will submit a cleanly typed document containing their personal information. Part of what will be required in that document are:

Alongside the transcript, three letters of recommendation will be submitted too, and one of them must be from a teacher in your school.

Finally, the applicant will also submit a document concerning their promotion of vegetarianism.

Application deadline

The organizers of the vegetarian scholarship will continue to receive submissions until the 20th of February, 2025.

Students who are committed to a vegan lifestyle can benefit from the US Humane Society’s Shaw-Worth Memorial scholarship. A Roth-Vegetarian Scholarship with a maximum reward of $10,000 is available through the Vegetarian Resource Group.
