How many seconds in a day? (Meaning, Calculations, Time conversions)

Have you ever pondered on the number of seconds in a day? in a week? In a year? We know the number of minutes in a year which is equivalent to 525,600, but not the number of seconds.

If you’re trying to ascertain the measurement of a year or the number of seconds left till summer vacation, this article will teach you how to calculate the number of seconds in a day, a week, a year, and more.

Not only will you learn how to calculate the number of seconds, but you also will get to know how all these units came about.

Read on to know how to make conversions from one unit of time to another!

How many seconds in a day?

What is a Second?

Before we proceed to know how many seconds are there in a day, let’s get to know what a second is.

A second is the basic unit of time, not the smallest. However, a second is an individual unit, more like a foundation upon which every other unit is derived.

This infers that every other unit, such as nanoseconds, minutes, hours, etc, is formulated from seconds. We talk about hours regarding minutes, but minutes are derived from seconds- the base unit.

A second is usually based on the Earth’s rotational cycle. One second has been scientifically proven to be 1/86,400 of the average solar day.

Now that we know how a second is generated from the rotation of the earth, it’s vital we also know that the speed at which it rotates slows down.

A second is based on a cesium radiation cycles-133 atom, often referred to as an “atomic clock.”

Sometimes “leap seconds” are added to the clock to keep better track of time due to the variation in the length of time in the astronomical year.

If not, eventually, we would end up with time being way off from where it is supposed to be. Seconds are uncommon, and in fact, don’t alter the time.

All it does is make us consistent with our routine and daily activities. However, the reverse is the case for leap seconds; leap seconds keep us on track so that a few missed seconds doesn’t turn into missed minute or hour.

Moreover, the worse is a missed day over time.

Now that we understand what a second is, before we can know how many seconds exists in a day, let’s know the different variations of time, asides from seconds, minutes, hours, and days.

How Many Seconds are in a Minute?

A minute is the largest unit after seconds. In one minute, there are 60 seconds. The origin isn’t known, as no one is sure about it. However, one thing is clear; it goes back to the ancient city of Babylon.

How Many Seconds Make an Hour?

It may already be known to you that there are 60 minutes in an hour, but how many seconds make up an hour? To figure it out, one needs to do some multiplications.

If 60 seconds make one minute and 60 minutes make one hour.

Therefore, to get the number of seconds in one hour, we must multiply 60 by 60. That results in a total of 3,600 seconds in 1 hour.

How many seconds in a day?

Time Conversions Key Tips

Do not consider it a big deal if you find it hard to memorize everything. Some people can’t say off their head the number of seconds in a decade.

However, as mentioned above, it’s not a big deal as the calculations are not difficult. It’s just simple math. See them below:

  • 60 Seconds = 1 Minute
  • 60 Minutes = 1 Hour
  • 24 Hours = 1 Day
  • 7 Days = 1 Week
  • 52 Weeks = 1 Year
  • 10 Years = 1 Decade
  • 10 Decades = 1 Century

Figuring out how many days or weeks are in a month can sometimes be difficult because months differ in several days. That is between 28 and 31 days.

If you want to figure out something on a more personal level rather than using an average, it is advised to utilize the number of days in the month you are looking for.

However, if calculating based on the specific month won’t work, and you prefer having a general estimate of the number of days in that month, you know that there are precisely 12 months and 365 days in a year.

Divide 365 by 12; this gives an estimate of 30.42, the mean number of days in a month. It’s best not to memorize it, solve it out; it’s as easy as simple math.

The same goes for the number of weeks in a year.

Divide the number of weeks in a year, 52, by the number of months in a year, 12. This gives an estimate of 4.3, the mean number of weeks in a month.

How many seconds in a day?

Calculation of Seconds Back and Forth

Although it could take some memorization, it’s not difficult to calculate seconds into days, hours, minutes, or even years.

For instance, if something takes 180 seconds, but you aren’t sure the number of minutes it is, all you need to do, is divide 180 by 60, the number of seconds in a minute.

The same logic applies to the calculation of days. For example, if you want to know the number of seconds in three days, you’ll first need to calculate the number of minutes in three days.

The number of hours in three days is 72 hours, deduced from multiplying 24 hours by three days (24hours * 3days), which is equivalent to 4,320 minutes (72hours * 60minutes), or 259,200 seconds (4,320minutes * 60seconds).

This method can be used for ambiguous numbers too. For instance, to calculate the number of seconds in a month. Firstly, the average number of days, hours, and minutes in a month needs to be known. The average number of days in a month is 30.42 days.

1 day = 24 hours; therefore, the average hours in a month is 730.08 hours (30.42days * 24hours).

730.08 hours = 43,804.8 minutes (730.08hours * 60minutes), or 2,628,288 seconds (43,804.8minutes * 60seconds).

Therefore, the total number of seconds in a month is 2,628,288 seconds.

Conclusion

Seconds are “base units” from which one can measure other larger units.

Seconds are important to derive units such as minutes, hours and days, etc. You don’t need to memorize these measurements and units; as with a simple calculation, you can get to keep track of time.
