The Ty Cobb Scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students in dentistry and medicine who have completed their first year of college.

Although the Ty Cobb Scholarship is only available to Georgia citizens, a student may attend an accredited college in any state.

Most scholarships are for one academic year and can be renewed for one or more years. Read on to get to know more about the Ty Cobb Scholarship.

Who is the Founder of the Ty Cobb Scholarship?

The founder of the Ty Cobb scholarship is former MLB star, Tyrus Raymond Cobb. “The Georgia Peach”, as he was nicknamed, lived from December 18, 1886, to July 17, 1961.

While playing in the American Major League Baseball, he plied his trade as an outfielder.

Born in Narrows, Georgia, Cobb spent the majority of his playing career playing for the Detroit Tigers, from 1905 to 1926.

He spent the remainder of his days as a baseball outfielder playing for Philadelphia Athletics from 1927 to 1928.

Ty Cobb Educational Foundation

Tyrus R. Cobb established the Ty Cobb Foundation to assist talented and worthy Georgia residents in pursuing a college degree.

Successful applicants get foundation scholarships to enroll in a full-time program at a recognized college.

The college must be recognized by a regional crediting body accredited by the Council for Higher Education.

While successful candidates are not obligated to the Foundation, prior beneficiaries and others are invited to contribute to the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation whenever possible.

Ty Cobb’s annual income as a baseball player was less than $40,000, but his early investments allowed him to succeed financially.

Cobb’s purchase of shares in Coca-Cola, a beverage company, was one of many investments that contributed to his early success.

Cobb’s financial success eventually enabled him to establish a scholarship program that aided thousands of Georgia college students.

Renewal forms are only provided to successful applicants awarded the Ty Cobb Scholarship the previous year.

If you did not get your renewal form as a Ty Cobb Scholarship recipient, your form might have been misplaced in the mail, or the Foundation may not have your current address.

In this instance, applicants must use the original renewal form and cannot copy another person’s renewal form.

Only those who received their renewal form the previous year may apply for renewal.

If you received your renewal form longer than a year ago, you are not eligible to apply for renewal. You will have to forfeit the renewal and apply as a new applicant.

Applicants who shift from undergraduate to professional status cannot renew but must apply as new applicants.

Distribution of Scholarship Funds

Only your university receives your scholarship funds. Around May 1st, the checks are mailed to your institution. Moreover, you should be able to pick them up at that time.

Suppose you need to use your Ty Cobb Scholarship monies for something other than books or tuition, such as food, accommodation, and transportation. In that case, your institution can provide you with the cash immediately.

If your scholarship is renewed for both the fall and spring semesters, but you plan to graduate after the fall semester, you will only receive half of your reward fund and will have to forfeit the other half.
