To Whom It May Concern (How to use it)

This is a letter salutation normally used when you are ignorant of who you are writing to, that is, it is used when you do not know who you are writing the letter to or who you are addressing at all. To Whom It May Concern can also be used when you do not know the name or reputation of the person you are writing to.

You can use other greeting salutations because this particular one ‘to whom it may concern’ is gradually getting outdated. Also, ‘Dear Sir or Dear Madam’ which was rampantly used in the time past is being considered as almost old fashioned.

However, the message can also be passed across without saluting the reader. The best way to begin is to write the first paragraph or use “Re: Topic You’re Writing About,” followed by the rest of the letter.

When Do We Use “To Whom It May Concern”:

It can be used at the beginning of a letter, email or other forms of communication when you don’t know who you are writing to or the receiver of the message.
It can be used when enquiring.
Can be used when writing a letter of interest or a prospective letter.
It can be used when writing a letter of recommendation or reference.
Can also be used when writing a letter of introduction

How Do We Use the phrase:

When addressing a letter “To Whom It May Concern,” it is written with its first letter being capitalized and a colon at the end. Then the letter is continued from the next paragraph.
